About Procedure Patient Stories FAQ s Aftercare Free Consultation
The Gastric Band also known as a stomach band or a Lap band is an inflatable silicone ring that is placed around the top of the stomach. It is often known as the ultimate portion controller or the gastric band diet, keeping you feeling fuller for longer.
The procedure is recommended for weight loss patients whose BMI is 30 or over (BMI Calculator), and who want a quick recovery as Gastric Band Surgery is ‘Keyhole’ or Laparoscopic and so less invasive. In addition, stomach bands may greatly improve Type 2 Diabetes, Dyslipidaemia, the amount of hypertensive medication taken, reduce continuous positive airway pressures machines for sleep apnoea, reflux disease, non-alcoholic fatty liver disease, stress incontinence episodes, asthma episodes, joint/muscle pain and generally improve the quality of life.
We have now introduced new aftercare packages and gastric band price options which start from just £4,995. This package price includes 2 years surgical cover as well as 2 years on unlimited band adjustments and dietitian support. The other package is £5,950 which includes 4 years surgical cover and 4 years unlimited band adjustments.
When the stomach band is optimally adjusted it compresses the top of the stomach, sending signals to the brain to generate a sense of fullness.
How a Gastric Band Works
The diagram shows the Gastric Band (Lap Band) in place around the top of the stomach. It is a confining device that is placed around the upper part of the stomach during Gastric Band Surgery making the stomach into an ‘hour-glass’ shape. The new, small, upper stomach pouch is about the size of a golf ball, with the larger part of the stomach sitting below the gastric band. It compresses the top of the stomach – this is why it is placed so high up. This compression causes certain nerve endings in your stomach wall to be stimulated, which effectively ‘tricks’ your brain into thinking your stomach is full. In other words, it means your appetite is reduced. As the new, smaller, upper part of the stomach quickly fills with food, the sensation of being full is achieved sooner and provides the signal to stop eating. Further, the ‘flow’ of the small portion eaten through to the lower part of the stomach is controlled by the Gastric Band, helping you to feel fuller for longer. The drier the texture of food, the slower it will pass through the opening created by the band.
The Gastric Bands used during Gastric Band Surgery by The Hospital Group are made by Allergan. Their American lapband website provides further information and some interesting customer Stomach Band Testimonials.
