Choosing your degree

Quick Links

With 40 higher education providers around Australia offering accredited and approved psychology degrees, students can select from a large range of programs, each with distinct approaches to study, areas of specialist interest and educational setting.

To practise as a registered psychologist, it is essential to choose only degrees which have been both accredited by the Australian Psychology Accreditation Council (APAC) and then approved by the Psychology Board of Australia (PsyBA). These accreditation and approval processes are a requirement for a course to be recognised as a qualification suitable for registration to practice by the PsyBA, which is the government-appointed national registration authority for psychologists.

An accredited degree has other benefits. Students can be assured that APAC accreditation of the degree ensures that high standards of education and training are maintained. Accreditation also ensures that, whatever career path is chosen after completing an undergraduate psychology degree, graduates of accredited degrees will be equipped with critical thinking, research training, clear communication and other skills which are highly valued by a wide range of employers and industries. These skills and traits are keenly sought after by potential employers.

Visit the APAC website for a full list of relevant accredited courses currently available in Australia, as well as others in Malaysia, Singapore and in Hong Kong. Users can begin their search by state, and will find a full list of higher education providers offering accredited courses, with links that will help you begin a detailed research.

Potential students should conduct careful and thorough research to discover which path is best for them. Read more on those pathways which lead to full registration on the ‘study pathways ‘ page.
